Open Source technologies are now being used as the infrastructure for many online mom-and-pop businesses and also by large companies such as Google, Yahoo, IBM, or Amazon Book stores. Did you know that Facebook which hosts more than 40 million users is developed using Open Source technologies? We like Open Source Software (OSS), because we can look inside, find out how they work, and make changes to customize them for our clients without having to deal with restrictive software licensing laws. Well developed OSS projects are supported by communities of hundreds of thousands of users and businesses ( Joomla! CMS has 100,000+ members ). Software bugs and security flaws have often been reviewed by hundreds or thousands of people, in fact we believe:
Many contributors to Open source projects are Application Architects, Engineers, Graduate Students, University Professors, Programmers and even hobbyists from all around the world who donate their time to develop great software. Your software Salesperson might tell you that OSS is developed by hackers in some remote country. That is mostly a myth! We use Open Source Software to run our day to day business operation and we offer the same solutions to our clients too. Clients get the software for free, and we only charge for customization, configuration, consulting and training. Using Open Source is a liberating experience because clients are no longer locked in with a single vendor. We are also involved with Open Source projects such as Joomla! CMS. This is the second year that rmd Studio has been involved with Google Summer of Code project. We also assist the Joomla! CMS core developers and resolve software bugs. We are not against proprietary software. We use Adobe Photoshop, Skype, Mac OSX and Windows which are all proprietary. Hey! Whatever works best, right? But when you have the option to know what's under the hood and be allowed to change and customize it for yourself, then proprietary software hits the concrete bottom, and that is very important specially in Web Application Development and Internet technologies in general. |
