Joomla! CMS 2.0 Ajax Framework Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 September 2006

Google Summer of CodeJoomla! CMSrmd Studio participated as a Project Mentor in Google Summer of code 2006 collaborating with computer science student Blagovest Dachev from USA and Joomla! Core Development Member Mateusz Krzeszowiec from Poland.

The entire project collaboration happened through IRC chat , Google Groups , Skype , and Joomla Forge .

Project goals were to develop proof of concepts, prototypes, and working examples of an AJAX framework for the next major release of Joomla! Content Management System (version 2.0). This framework was later on re-named to Project JAJAX by the team.

Project goals were set as following:

  • To extend the functionality of Joomla! CMS template management (patTemplate), and incorporate DOJO Open Source toolkit into Joomla’s framework, so developers could use XML definitions in order to create elaborated DHTML UI widgets.
  • To incorporate XAJAX Open Source package into Joomla’s framework (JAJAX) and develop a usable Application Programming Interface ( API ) .
  • To implement a working example of an entity list administration for the back-end, and also provide suitable documentation and diagrams as a reference for future developers.

The scope of this project would have required more than four month time, however despite the ambitious goals set by the team, Project JAJAX managed to receive good ratings by the community and the Core Development team according to the final report released by Joomla (PDF File) . Student Blagovest Dachev was the major player in this project.

The delivered results by JAJAX project are going to be used in Joomla version 2.0 which will be released by the end of year 2007. ( Visit Joomla Summer of Code Blog )
